Can’t see results from habits? Here’s a quick check for you.

Tiny actions create tiny results. The aggregation of tiny results become remarkable results. Therefore, by constant discipline and self-belief, any man can achieve great things.

Knowing that, it naturally raises the question: Does every tiny action count? Or there is a condition for tiny result to aggregate?

Sitting with this question sharpens your sense of what a “High-quality tiny action” really is. From building habits, I’ve found five conditions that let small steps actually add up:

5 Conditions for Tiny Actions to Aggregate

  1. Aligned with your goals: You are moving in the right direction.
  2. Retainable: The tiny gains don’t leak away faster than you add them up. (Take notes, reviews, recover)
  3. Compounding mechanism: Today’s win makes tomorrow’s win easier (skill stacking, network effects, progressive overload, interest). It is hard to prove that the compounding mechanism exist, but it is almost certain that gaining experience in any skill will make your next step easier.
  4. Bottleneck-focused: You’re spending time on improving the current bottleneck, not polishing non-bottlenecks.
  5. Sustainable: Small enough to hit with ~99% certainty, day after day.

Example

Let’s say you want to be more knowledgeable. So the tiny action is to read one page everyday. Now let’s check the conditions:

  1. Aligned with your goals ✅
  2. Retainable: I have to spend some time taking notes and memorizing the content. ❗️
  3. Compounding Mechanism: Could improve focus over time, but not for sure.❗️
  4. Bottleneck-focused: read the books that teach me what I don’t know rather than provide little information.✅
  5. Sustainable: Should be doable everyday. ✅ So I’ve recognized some problem here, and I can change the action statement from

Read 1 page everyday

to

After brushing my teeth, I will read 1 page, then write 1 sentence (takeaway) in notebook, with my phone away.

Conclusion

Tiny actions can truly contribute a lot to your goals, but they have to align with what you want and be able to retain and compound over a period of time. Adding constraints to your habits would improve the quality of every tiny action, and I bet you will have better results in less time!
